Now that Tottenham have sacked Mauricio Pochettino, AC Milan are free to make a revamped attempt for the Argentine coach.
Shortly before the end of last season, the hunt began for a new coach after Gennaro Gattuso’s decision to resign. In June, after the umpteenth changes within the club, Paolo Maldini took the reins of the situation and chose the Italian option: Marco Giampaolo.
A solution that lasted only seven matches. Giampaolo was sacked and replaced with Stefano Pioli, who at this moment represents the figure of the ferryman. In fact the AC Milan project will hardly continue with the former Fiorentina coach on the dugout. Milan and Pioli are expected to part ways at the end of the season.
It is clear that a lot depends on the results but the fixed idea of Elliott Management is another type of coach. Among the candidates mentioned last year there was also the name of Mauricio Pochettino. At that time Pochettino had just lost the Champions League final and had publicly declared his desire to leave Tottenham.
The Argentine coach was sacked yesterday by Tottenham after a disastrous start to the league. Only fourteen points in twelve games (14th place in the standings). The Spurs have decided to send him away and recently announced the arrival of Jose Mourinho. Pochettino is therefore free now and a revamped attempt from AC Milan, on Elliott’s indication, can not be excluded. The American owners of AC Milan would love to have a coach of international recognition lead the club.
Pochettino is a profile of great value. In five years he contributed greatly to the technical growth of Tottenham, to date one of the strongest teams in the Premier League despite the negative period of last months. He took a team of underachievers to a historic Champions League final and Premier League contenders. The Argentine coach will now enjoy a well-deserved rest, but in the meantime, he’s already looking around for a new club. Serie A is a welcome option for Pochettino whose family is of Italian descent.
