Investcorp are set to acquire AC Milan club from Elliot Management but what will happen with Paolo Maldini.
Bahrain based fund Investcorp is in exclusive negotiations to buy AC Milan club from Elliott Management. Investcorp is expected to spend a figure close to one billion euros to acquire the Italian club from the American fund. The investment fund manages 40 billion in assets but this is the first time they enter the football world.
The parties have already completed the due diligence process. Elliott Management are set to leave after four years at the helm of the Rossoneri. The Americans successfully built a stable club with improved financial conditions and much more competitive on the pitch.
A big part in AC Milan’s recent success has played Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara. However, the contracts of the two expire at the end of the season and have not been renewed yet. A change in AC Milan’s ownership will surely be followed by changes in the management structure but Paolo Maldini and Massara will stay and continue to play a key part in the future as well.
La Repubblica reports that the contract renewal of Paolo Maldini is not in question. The current AC Milan technical director has done a fantastic job building a competitive squad while working under Elliott’s strict economic restrictions. It will be interesting to see what Maldini and Massara will be able to do with more funds at their disposal.
Despite his great work as a director, Paolo Maldini is a symbol of AC Milan and the new ownership would not want to start their tenure on the wrong foot. The feeling, at the moment, is that his role is not in question. The biggest issue Investcop will need to solve will be that of the new stadium. It is highly probable that the new San Siro, baptized as “the ‘Cathedral”, will be build outside Milan, at the Sesto San Giovanni area.
