Gennaro Gattuso’s team in recent seasons has often borrowed elements from Gian Piero Gasperini’s side. In 2017 AC Milan spent around 60 million euros to sign Franck Kessie and Andrea Conti. The 22 year old central midfielder is a pillar of the team despite his young age. Coach Gattuso has a great appreciation for him and can’t think of Milan without Kessie in the starting eleven.
The Italian full-back instead has struggled a lot in his two seasons at San Siro. Conti is definitely one of the biggest talents in Italian football but a severe knee injury has kept him out for nearly a year and a half. Thankfully hes is now fit and ready to challenge Calabria for the starting right-back role.
Without forgetting the arrival of Mattia Caldara from Juventus, even if the defender had established himself during his years at Atalanta. Caldara has made only one appearance with the Rossoneri but he should return within 10 days.
According to Tuttosport, during Saturday’s Atalanta-Milan match, the Rossoneri executives found a fertile opportunity to watch closely other Atalanta players who might be useful for Milan in the future, perhaps even in the next summer transfer window. Leonardo and Paolo Maldini can exploit the historically good relationship with the Percassi family and initiate new negotiations shortly for 4 players.

Timothy Castagne | RB
Tuttosport reports that the first name in Leonardo’s list is Timothy Castagne. The 23 year old Belgium international is one of the most promising defenders in Serie A since joining Atalanta in 2017 for 6 million euros.
In fact Castagne is of special interest for AC Milan due to his ductility and ability to cover the entire right flank on his own. Castagne’s natural position is that of right-back but he has often been deployed as left-back.
Thought Milan are fully covered on the right with Calabria and Andrea Conti things could change on the opposite flank. It is not yet clear if Ricardo Rodriguez and Diego Laxalt with be confirmed for next season so the Atalanta defender could represent a good opportunity.
Timothy Castagne
Timothy Castagne has made 21 appearances this season scoring 3 goals and providing 3 assists. His current price tag is around 15 million euros but the Belgian’s contract expires in one year and the parties have’t agreed a new deal yet.

Josip Ilicic | AM
Another player that Milan like a lot is the Slovenian midfielder Josip Ilicic. The 31 year old former Fiorentina was without a doubt Atalanta’s best player against Milan and the one who provided the winning assist for Freuler.
The left-footed fantasista has quality and physical strength that could be useful to the Rossoneri cause. The management sees him as a perfect reinforcement if the Rossoneri had to give up one between the disappointing Castillejo and Calhanoglu.
Ilicic has made 18 Serie A appearances so far. He has scored 7 goals and has offered 5 assists for his teammates. Just like Castagne’s, even his contract expires in one year.

AC Milan currently do not play with an attacking midfielder but Ilicic could offer additional choices to coach Gennaro Gattuso. The Slovenian can also be deployed as second striker or right winger.

Remo Freuler | CM
AC Milan were in search of a new central midfielder for a long time. The Rossoneri were considering several names but in the end the management decided to push the arrival of a new midfielder for the summer. One of the players that Milan wanted was also Remo Freuler.
The Switzerland international is one of the best players in Italy in his position. Borussia Monchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund are also interested in his services so Milan may need to move quickly in order to avoid extra competition from foreign clubs.
La Gazzetta dello Sport first reported on AC Milan’s interested in Remo Freuler in December but it was difficult at the time to convicne Atalanta to sell one of their most prized assets during the winter campaign.
Remo Freuler
So far Freuler has made 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring two and providing 3 assists. Freuler can also play as defensive midfielder. The 26 year old could leave at the end of the season for a fee of 18-20 million euros.

Marten De Roon | CM
Another interesting Atlanta midfielder that AC Milan are monitoring is Marten De Roon. With Jose Mauri, Montolivo and Bertolacci all set to leave San Siro at the end of the season the club is planning more than one signing in midfield.
Furthermore, Champions League qualification could facilitate heavy investments on the market in the summer.

De Roon is known for his tough tackling and commitment. He spent a positive one year in England before coming back to Atlanta. He we a transfer target of Milan in 2016 but in the end nothing happened. Perhaps things could turn out differently this time.
