AC Milan eye move for Real Madrid defender to replace Theo
AC Milan have identified the Real Madrid defender as the successor of Theo Hernandez who could leave the club this summer.
The signing of Theo Hernandez from Real Madrid is not only one of Paolo Maldini’s best signings but absolutely one of the Rossoneri’s best of the decade for the quality-price report. Maldini travled to meet Theo personally in the now famous Ibiza meeting convincing him to reject Napoli and Bayer Leverkusen. A move that has paid off handsomely for both parties with Hernandez providing e plethora of goals and assist, atypical for a defender.
Not since the time of Serginho, Milan had such a fast and attacking-minded left back that could constantly contribute with goals and assists. This season alone, Theo Hernandez has scored 5 goals and provided 10 assists. It seems like just a matter of time before Hernandez overtakes Paolo Maldini as the top goal scoring defender in AC Milan history. However, the future of the 26-year-old French defender is quite unclear.
The contract of Theo with AC Milan expires in 2026 and no real progress has been made so far. While the France international would love to continue at San Siro, Milan could sacrifice him this summer if a good proposal comes. Bayern Munich are very interest and have Theo Hernandez as the top choice to replace Alphonso Davies who seems destined to join Real Madrid this summer.
AC Milan are eyeing a move for Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy as a replacement for Theo Hernandez if he ends up leaving. Ferland Mendy is in a similar contract situation with the Spanish giants. With only one year remaining in his deal with the Los Blancos, Real Madrid are expected to sell Mendy this summer in order to avoid losing him as a free agent in one year.
In 2018, Real Madrid spent €48 million to purchase Ferland Mendy from Lyon. He has made over 160 appearances across five seasons with Madrid playing an important in their success during recent years. While Mendy is praised for his defensive prowess he lacks composure in attacking scenarios. In short, Mendy is neither a goal scorer or a assist provider.
The 28-year-old Frenchman is a bulwark for the Real Madrid back line. He is renown for his interceptions, tackles and clearances. His ability to break up play and regain possession and capacity for areal duels make Mendy a complete defender. Nevertheless, he would not be a direct replacement for Hernandez but rather a shift in philosophy for AC Milan’s defence.
