Maldini was willing to meet Spanish defender’s €30m release clause

Paolo Maldini wanted to bring Spanish talent Unai Nunez at AC Milan but the Athletic Bilbao defender changed his mind.

The signing of a new defender is a priority for AC Milan when the January transfer window opens. Despite the pleasant surprise of Pierre Kalulu in the centre back role, the management intends and bring in a natural centre back. A forced choice also due to other factors.

Two defenders like Mateo Musacchio and Leo Duarte are expected to leave soon while Matteo Gabbia will likely stay out until February. So Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara need a reinforcement to complete Stefano Pioli’s squad.

The most likely name to join AC Milan is that of Mohamed Simakan of Strasbourg, who was very close to the Rossoneri in January. However, last month AC Milan made a concrete attempt to sign Spanish starlet Unai Nunez.

Calciomercato.it reports that Milan were in talks with both the player and Athletic Bilbao. Paolo Maldini had scouted Nunez and appreciated his performances in the Under 21 European Championship. Unai Nunez played a key role for Spain U-21 that ended up winning the trophy.

Maldini was quite impressed and had advised AC Milan to meet his release clause of 30 million euros. Surprisingly, Nunez made a u turn and days later decided to renew his contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2025. An unexpected decision that forced AC Milan to look at other defenders.
