The football betting scandal continues to get bigger in Italy with another former AC Milan player involved after Sandro Tonali.
A scandal has erupted on Italian football with several notable names under investigation for illegal betting. The most prominent players are certainly Nicolo Zaniolo and Sandro Tonali. The former AC Milan is the one risking the most. Tonali has admitted to gambling addiction and is already undergoing specialized therapy.
Nevertheless, the situation is even worse than initially imagined with Sandro Tonali admitting to not only betting but also betting on AC Milan. A shocking and unimageable action from the Italian international who is facing a very long punishment that could keep him outside football for more than three years and effectively end his professional career.
Tonali’s position has worsened by Fagioli’s testimony who revealed it was Sandro who directed him to join the illegal betting platforms. However, Sandro Tonali is not the only former AC Milan player involved in the betting scandal. Fabrizio Corona, who first broke the news, is reporting that Stephan El Shaarawy is also involved.
There is no official communication that Stephan El Shaarawy is under investigation for illegal betting but he together with teammate Nicola Zalewski are rumored to be. Corona claim to have video proof of Roma players discussing betting on games during training sessions. The Italian prosecutors have not commented yet on this while Zalewski denies any wrongdoing.
Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli received a light punishment of 7 months of ban from football. Fagioli profited from being the first to collaborate with the justice system and reveal the entire betting scheme, platforms used and people involved, footballers or not. No such treatment will be reserved for Tonali who initially denied any wrongdoing and later said he had never gambled on football matches only to admit at the end that he had went as far as to bet on his own squad.
