Italy will miss out on the World Cup for the second time in a row and asked AC Milan coach Sefano Pioli to open a new cycle.
European football was shocked yesterday when North Macedonia defeated Italy 1-0 in home ground knocking the Azzurri out of World Cup qualifiers. An embarrassing defeat for the Italian national team. For the second time in a row Italy will not play at World Cup after missing out on Russia 2018.
Despite the recent European success, Roberto Mancini was unable to guide his squad to the World Cup. The Italian coach is expected to resign after the shameful loss with Macedonia. The Italian national team is already looking for his successor.
SportMediaset reports that the AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli has been offered the job. In fact, the Italian federation had inquired about Pioli even before the clamorous flop against Macedonia. A prestigious offer that Pioli refused to take into consideration. Coaching the national is the dream of every Italian coach but Pioli has other plans.
The AC Milan coach has attracted the attention of other important clubs after the great work done with the Rossoneri. AC Milan are finally challenging for the Scudetto after many years of mediocrity. Pioli’s contract expires in 2023 and the parties will sit down at the end of the season to discuss an extension.
Fabio Cannavaro will most likely succeed Roberto Mancini as Italy coach. Cannavaro has already said yes to an inquiry by the Italian federation of football. The former centre back could be joined by Marcello Lippi in the role of technical director to open a new cycle.
