The breakthrough of Matteo Gabbia and the good performances of Simon Kjaer will have an impact on the rest of the defence.
The hierarchies in the defense of Milan have changed. In particular after the winter transfer window. January signing Simon Kjaer, who arrived among skepticism, surprisingly has become a regular starter in Pioli’s XI. Solid, concentrated and experienced, the Danish former Atalanta immediately made his best characteristics visible.
The stock of Matteo Gabbia has been rising too. The 20-year-old defender is steadily fining more space and has gained the trust of Stefano Pioli with some positive performances since his debut.
This change in club’s hierarchies is also confirmed by AC Milan’s intention to sign Kjaer on a permanent transfer. The Rossoneri have an option to buy the central defender for €2.5 million from Sevilla.
Gabbia, on the other hand, has recently renewed his contract with AC Milan until 2024 thus committing his future at the Rossoneri and avoiding the possibility of a loan in the lower leagues.
However, the big loser of this situation is Mateo Musacchio. The Argentine centre back has lost his spot in the starting eleven and has made only 3 appearances from the first minute this year. A series of muscle problems and underwhelming performances has seen the former Villarreal become a peripheral figure of the squad. Musacchio too has showed some signs of personal dissatisfaction.
According to Calciomercato, Mateo Musacchio will be sold in the summer. Premier League and La Liga clubs are reportedly interested in the 29-year-old defender. With his contract expiring in one year, and no renewal talks held so far, the sale is Musacchio is practically guaranteed. In 2017 AC Milan paid €18 million to sign him from Villarreal.
