Vincenzo Montella may soon have to face a shortage of defenders. That’s why the manager is thinking about adapting Davide Calabria in a new position.
Initially there was talk of the possible arrival of a new central defender in the case of both Gabriel Paletta and Gustavo Gomez end up in the Turkish clubs of Fenerbahce (or Lazio) and Trabzonspor. Deals for the two players are about to be closed soon.
But according to reports by Quotidiano Sportivo, AC Milan could eventually decide not to buy any new centre back. In fact, Vincenzo Montella wants to adapt Davide Calabria in that role. The 20 year old youth sector exponent plays as right back but the manager seems willing to try him in a new position as he thinks Calabria can cover it.
Initially the manager thought about adapting Ricardo Rodriguez in that role, since he had played as centre back while at Wolfsburg, but after the latest positive games of Luca Antonelli, he wants to give the 30 year old a shot at left back as Rodriguez’s substitute. Leaving more competition on the right with Conti, Abate and Calabria fighting for a starter place.
We’ll have to wait and see how Calabria will fare in that position and when the manager will use Calabria as centre back in an official match. Being 1.77 meter high, not really a giant, doesn’t help much but Montella apparently believes that in the event of an emergency, former Primavera full back can be used at the center of defense. Even though, much will depend on the departure of Gomez and Paletta, which at the moment seem far away from Milanello.
