Pioli hints at formation change
After the disappointing derby match, AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli was open to the idea of making formation changes.
At the end of the derby against Inter, Stefano Pioli answered several questions at the press conference. In particular, the AC Milan coach did not exclude the possibility of changing something on a tactical level after the last disappointing match. The Rossoneri have suffered two consecutive defeats in the league, against Spezia and Inter, without scoring a single goal, but conceding five so considering changes would not be that bad.
When asked about the possible formation change for the next games Pioli replies: “We’ll see, anything is possible. From tomorrow we will make our assessments thinking about the best for the team“. The Italian coach does not rule out the possibility of changing something in the set-up. In fact, Milan have often suffered lately in midfield without defensive coverage or offensive support.
It is difficult to predict which game system could be better for AC Milan in the next matches but Pioli certainly will not revolutionize his approach and his ideas. However, some adjustments can be expected, more likely in midfield and attack.
The number one alternative could be to move to a 4-3-3 formation, which would allow more coverage in midfield. Until Hakan Calhanoglu returns to his pre-Covid form, it is possible that Pioli may prefer a midfielder like Meite or a someone more attacking-minded like Rade Krunic.
A conservative 4-4-2 to avoid leaving Ibrahimovic too isolated in attack may be another option. In this case one between Rebic, Leao or Mandzukic would go to support the Swede, providing more depth in attack but less dynamism between the lines. The upcoming match with Red Star Belgrade could be ideal to experiment since the next Serie A match is against a heavyweight like Roma.
