If AC Milan fail to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic in January the Rossoneri will prioritize the purchase of Napoli star striker Dries Mertens.

The countdown for Zlatan Ibrahimovic has began. The Swedish striker is Milan’s January dream. All the attention of the Rossoneri management, for the moment, is focused on the now former LA Galaxy bomber. AC Milan have offered Ibrahimovic a contract 9.5 million euros for 18 months. Within ten days the Rossoneri expect a final answer from Zlatan. Milan are confident and Ibra’s interview with GQ indicates that former striker is set to return for a second spell at San Siro.

Nevertheless, if Ibrahimovic opts for Napoli or Bologna the Rossoneri are forced to look around for a new striker. The numbers of the AC Milan’s attack on the other hand are merciless. Piatek and Rafael Leao have scored only one goal apiece on open play (also two penalties for the Pole). Too little for a team that aimed for qualification in European competitions.

The Rossoneri’s plan B seems to lead to Italy. AC Milan are carefully monitoring the situation of Dries Mertens. Napoli are plagued by an inside crisis and the contract renewal is not an option for the Belgian forward. Mertens’ contract with Napoli expires in 2020 and the Rossoneri could sign an experienced player and proven goal scorer for a fraction of his real value.

Napoli too are thinking about Zlatan Ibrahimovic and it could be precisely Mertens who makes room for the Swede, in a really crowded department, which also includes Milik, Llorente, Lozano and Insigne. Everything therefore seems to turn, once again, around the Swede, which could change the future of Milan’s attack.

AC Milan are not the only club interested in Dries Mertens who has a price tag of €10 million. Inter, Juventus and Roma have also inquired about the 32-year-old attacker. However, the most lucrative alternative for Mertens is China where they are ready to cover him in gold should he seriously think about it.
