Maldini to leave AC Milan after tense Cardinale meeting

Cardinale-Maldini

The long-awaited meeting between Paolo Maldini and Gerry Cardinale ended with great disappointment with Maldini set to leave AC Milan.

This morning, in a hotel in Milan, was held a crucial meeting that will greatly influence the Rossoneri’s future for next season. AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale met with the management duo of the club, Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara. The main topic of the confrontation was the transfer policy but also the intentions of each party.

Unfortunately, the meeting did not go well at all according to Sky Sport. Once again there was tension in particular between Paolo Maldini and Gerry Cardinale. Both parties have a totally different vision regarding what should be the future of the club. In particular, Maldini asked the owner for greater autonomy of action on the market but his request was denied by RedBird.

At the same time, Maldini asked Cardinale to spend more money this summer to strengthen the squad since AC Milan will be participating in Champions League for the third year and are closing the year on green for the first time in two decades. Again such request was denied from Cardinale. RedBird want AC Milan to continue the sustainability path by relying on young and inexpensive players projecting a summer transfer budget of around €50 million.

In short, the parties have different and incompatible visions. The ongoing frictions will likely lead to Paolo Maldini’s farewell to Milan. Sky Sport reports that Paolo Maldini is on the verge of handing his resignation. The AC Milan legend feels that Cardinale is not giving the necessary backing to take the club to the next levels.

In order to compete in Italy and Champions League, Maldini believes that Milan need to sign top players and not only talented youngsters. Such an opinion is not shared by Cardinale. The division looks incurable and at all probability Paolo Maldini will bid farewell to AC Milan in the coming days.

The former AC Milan defender does not want to drag the situation like happened last summer. At that time, Cardinale said Maldini and Massara’s contract renewals were a matter of days but the renewal only happened at the very last day of their contract. The Rossoneri are about to enter another state of turmoil.
