Luciano Spalletti confirms AC Milan talks
Luciano Spalletti, who was set to become the new coach of AC Milan after Giampaolo, talks for the first time on why he didn’t join the Rossoneri.
After a disastrous start to the season AC Milan decided to sack newly appointed coach Marco Giampaolo. A 2-1 win against Genoa wasn’t enough for Giampaolo to save his job. He was fired after just seven games at the helm of AC Milan with a record of 3 win and 4 defeats. Stefano Pioli succeeded Giampaolo at the Rossoneri but he wasn’t the club’s first choice.
Before announcing Pioli as the new coach of AC Milan, Boban and Maldini had contacted former Inter coach Luciano Spalletti. The 60-year-old Italian was considered as the right profile due to his personality, experience and ability to improve his squads. An expert name to manage a young squad like Milan.
Spalletti agreed a two-year deal with the option for a third at 4 million per season. However, there was one big problem. Luciano Spalletti was still under contract with Inter until 2021. Spalletti and Inter failed to agree a severance package and the Nerazzurri blocked his move to Milan. For the first time Spalletti sheds light on what happened confirming that he had agreed to join AC Milan.
“I didn’t reject Milan, the real version is that, having a two-year contract with Inter, my hand were tied. They (Inter) decided to leave me at home and pay me for staying at home. Of course if it was up to me I would never have stopped being a coach. Then Milan found another very capable coach, if he is given time he will demonstrate his qualities“, said Spalletti .
According to reports, Inter had offered Spalletti €1 million (his salary until December 2019) while the Italian coach asked for Inter to cover a full year salary (€4.5 million).
