AC Milan are in negotiations to extend to contract of Rafael Leao with the current agreement set to expire in 2024.
The Rafael Leao matter continues to cause a lot of headaches for the Rossoneri. The club management expected to complete the renewal of the Portuguese left winger within January but months are passing and there is still on solution on the horiazon. Nevertheless, contacts between the clubs and the player have never stopped.
The parties are still in touch and there have been new events in recent days. Journalist Andrea Longoni repots that the 23-year-old has presented to demands to the club in order to put pen to paper on a new agreement. Rafael Leao has asked AC Milan a five-year contract of €7.5 million per season guaranteed plus bonuses believed to be of around €1.5 million.
So practically a salary of €9 million per season for the next five years. In addition, Leao has also asked a signing bonus of €2 million. Unlike for Italian players, the Rossoneri will have a lesser burden in taxes for a foreign player like Leao. So in order to meet Leao’s demands, AC Milan will need to spend up to €70 million in gross terms.
Such figures would make Rafael Leao the highest paid player in Serie A. A huge upgrade form from his current salary of around €1.8 million. The 23-year-old would end up earning even more than Paul Pogba. It is certainly a request that has made Milan thinking.
The Portugal international has suffered a lot from AC Milan’s transition to 3-4-2-1. The new formation has forced Leao to play more near the center than in the past. Still, he has 9 goals and 10 assists in 33 appearances so far. Milan now have a difficult choice to make. Either Leao renews or he will be sold when the summer transfer window opens.
