Journalist Luca Serafini reveals how AC Milan players would meet with the Singer family to convince them to back Pioli and abandon the Rangnick idea.
The great performance against Manchester United seems to have swept away the bad memories related to the certainly not exciting displays against Udinese but above all with Spezia and Inter. At Old Trafford against United, Stefano Pioli’s real AC Milan was seen again. That team capable of hold a very long series of consecutive positive results and of beating stronger opponents such as Juventus.
Milan has changed its face since the return to the pitch after the lockdown and it is undeniable that much of the credit for this growth goes to Pioli and his staff, as well as Maldini, Massara and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The arrival of the Swedish striker brought that indispensable mentality of thinking big.
As anyone remembers, before Stefano Pioli’s contract renewal, which led to the permanence of the entire management, as well as the Swedish bomber, Elliott and Gazidis were one step away from clearing everything and appointing Ralf Rangnick.
Journalist Luca Serafini recalls that the new Milan was born precisely from the choice of Elliott to abandon the Rangnick idea. “I was very critical with Elliott when Boban and Maldini, instead of having support in their work, were being hampered. They didn’t want to sign Messi and Aguero but a couple of old buccaneers together with the schoolchildren“.
“The epochal turning point was to give up on the Rangnick revolution. Elliot and Gazidis finally realized that alchemy was formed by the triangle Maldini, Pioli, Ibrahimovic“.
“The squad united around Pioli. The team was ready to send a representative to the Singer family but they (the Singers) took a step back before this happened. The pressure from the entire squad and the determination to do such an unprecedented gesture convinced Paul Singer and his son to back Pioli.
