AC Milan made an attempt to bring Jose Mourinho back to Italy over the summer but negotiations were unsuccessful.
Since December Jose Mourinho is not in charge of a football club. The Portuguese icon was sacked by Manchester United after a series of negative results in the Premier League and is now featuring as a pundit for Sky Sports until the next big opportunity presents itself.
Together with Massimiliano Allegri and Arsene Wenger, Jose is one of the few big names currently without a squad. However, offers have not lacked for the two-times Champions League winner who also had talks with the Rossoneri during the summer.
According to goal.com, AC Milan had talks with Jose Mourinho before appointing Marco Giampaolo as new coach. The Portuguese turned down approaches from AC Milan, Monaco, Lille, Wolfsburg and Schalke between May and September. Goal reports that the former Inter, Chelsea, Real Madrid and United coach wants Real Madrid return. Despite Zidane not at risk of being fired Jose still awaits a chance to return to Santiago Bernabeu.
In June, acmilaninfo.com reported that club executives met with Jose in London and discussed the possibility of his return in Italy. According to Carlo Pellegatti, Jose was open to the idea of a return to Italy and at that time he was in search of a club that could fully trust him a new project.
He did not pretend a high salary, however, Mourinho had one non-negotiable condition: the appointment of Luis Campos as sporting director of AC Milan. The Portuguese coach wanted to work with his compatriot who has done wonders at Monaco and Lille. It was impossible to bring Luis Campos at San Siro with Lille unwilling to allow his departure. Negotiations lasted for just a few days and AC Milan eventually opted for Giampaolo.
