Gattuso: “Inter deserved more, we lacked courage. The goal? The mistake was…”
Coach Gennaro Gattuso was interviewed by Sky Sport after Inter-Milan. A hard-fought derby that was decided by Icardi’s last minute header.
On the match: “Inter deserved something more from this match. We played against a physical team, there were good things, the team was very good. Sometimes we could come out with more courage, but today the team knew how to suffer. We had many set pieces against, it was not easy, we remained compact. In the last 15/20 minutes we failed to exploit 3/4 good chances .There is great regret, it burns but Inter did something more then us“.
On the error of the goal conceded: “The error was of the whole back line. We must not point out fingers. We must cure our wounds, tomorrow we must look ahead. It was a wrong reading but the games are lost all together. We lost because we had little courage”.
On tactic: “So many times we had to chase the opponents, it was hard, too much ground to cover. We could have circulated the ball better and get out of pressure. We failed to make a single pure counter-attack“.
On the difficulties: “When there is too much ground to cover you worry about closing the passing lines, on many occasions we failed to arrive on time in the opponent’s area”.
On Cutrone’s position: “I brought in Cutrone in Calhanoglu’s place, he had spent a lot of energies. I did not want to change tactical set-up, we never suffered in the second half. Patrick has often played in that role, I thought to put him there to inject a little more energy“.
On many bookings: “Today the team gave a lot, it gave everything. I liked a lot the team on this aspect. We lack something but today we did a lot. Even though we had our balls, they did something more”.
On the final moments of the match: “We attacked a lot in the last 15-20 minutes, we made many errors on the last pass“.
