Gds: Maldini renewal, the details of the agreement and future projects with Cardinale
AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini and sporting director Frederic Massara have extended their contracts with AC Milan for two years.
After a month’s wait, so much has passed since Paolo Maldini’s interview with Gazzetta dello Sport in which clarity was asked about his future, the long-awaited renewal of the technical director has finally been closed. Yesterday afternoon AC Milan confirmed that Maldini and Massara have signed new two-year contracts.
The long delay was not due to economic issues (2 million per year plus bonuses for second star and Champions League) but simply because of different visions on the future of the club, for which a meeting point was found.
The main issue of the negotiation was above all that linked to the division of powers between the technical area and club management. In the end Maldini will enjoy greater autonomy and will be able, alongside Frederic Massara and Stefano Pioli, to be the protagonist of the important choices. Obviously there are limits to be respected and, for large operations, as happens in large companies, the CEO, Ivan Gazidis, will have the last word.
Basically all the parties have to be satisfied on important transfers. Maldini will be more involved and will have more freedom on choices. The club retained its decision-making power. This at least until the final closing which, with the arrival of Gerry Cardinale and his men, could also shuffle some cards.
The RedBird number one played a central role in the renewal negotiations. First by confirming the desire to continue with Maldini, then by participating in the renewal talks with his lawyers. Now it is up to him, with Maldini and Massara, to continue building a winning squad from all points of view. The relationship between Cardinale and Maldini, as pointed out by the future owner himself, seems to have been born under a lucky star after the meeting at the beginning of June.
Now AC Milan will throw themselves on the mercato and look for those signings that the Rossoneri technical director had asked for in the aftermath of the Scudetto victory. Players who can raise the level of the squad to confirm themselves in Italy but above all in Europe, where Milan want to return protagonist. Victory in Champions represents the real great objective of the former Rossoneri number 3.
