With only 2 wins in the last 20 years, it up to Marco Giampaolo to break AC Milan’s series of negative results against Fatal Verona.
On Sunday, AC Milan face Hellas, or better “Fatal Verona”, a team that recalls some bad memories for the Rossoneri. Defeats against Verona have cost AC Milan twice the Scudetto, first in 1973 when Nereo Rocco’s side lost the title to Juventus and in 1990 when Arrigo Sacchi’s AC Milan handed the Scudetto to Napoli.
The Marcantonio Bentegodi stadium has traditionally been a challenge for the Rossoneri. In 32 matches played there against Hellas Verona, AC Milan have won 9 win, drawn 12 and lost 11. In the last 20 years AC Milan have tasted victory against Verona at Bentegodi on only two occasions:
- Season 2001/2002: Carlo Ancelotti’s team beats Alberto Malesani’s side 2-1. Adrian Mutu is the author of the opening goal but Filippo Inzaghi and Andrea Pirlo overturn everything on Milan’s favor.
- Season 2014/2015: The Rossoneri coached by Pippo Inzaghi conquer Marcantonio Bentegodi 3-1 thanks to Rafael Marquez’s own goal and a brace by Keisuke Honda. Nicolas Lopez scored Verona’s only goal in the final moments of the game.
AC Milan have lost the last two away league matches with Hellas Verona. In 2015-2016, with Cristian Brocchi on the bench, Milan lost 2-1. Gennaro Gattuso did even worse in 2017/2018 suffering an embarrassing 3-0 defeat.
Hellas Verona vs AC Milan (0-3)
On Sunday, 15 September, it will be Marco Giampaolo’s task to break this series of defeats by winning 3 very important points before the derby against Inter. Ivan Juric’s side will try to continue their positive results after one win and one draw in the first two rounds of Serie A.
