Agent Giuseppe Riso confirms that Atalanta will not exercise their option to purchase Mattia Caldara from AC Milan.
Mattia Caldara will be remembered as one of AC Milan’s biggest flops of recent years. In 2018, Caldara joined the Rossoneri as part of the sensational swap deal that saw Leonardo Bonucci return to Juventus. Both players were valued at around 36 million euros.
After 18 months at San Siro, and only two appearances, Caldara returned to Atalanta on loan with the option to buy set at 16 million euros. Unfortunately for the Rossoneri, Atalanta have decided against exercising their option and the Italian will return to Milan at the end of the season.
When asked about Caldara’s future, his agent Giuseppe Riso was clear. “At the end of the season Caldara will return to Milan”. The 26-year-old centre back has made 8 appearances so far for a disappointing total of just 113 minutes played.
Caldara’s return is a big problem for the Rossoneri. At the moment is difficult to say what will happen with him given that the management has planned several changes for the defence. The most likely option is that Milan will try to sell him by lowering his price tag even more.
Paolo Maldini’s priority is to sign Fikayo Tomori on a permanent deal. If the English defender stays, together with Kjaer, Romagnoli and Gabbia, Pioli will have four centre backs at his disposal so the former Atalanta would be in the bottom of the pecking order.
