The numbers: AC Milan’s weak spot
Davide Calabria and Andrea Conti are suffering a disastrous to the season. The right side of the defence is the area from where AC Milan are conceding more goals.
AC Milan are having an emergency situation on the right side of the defence. As highlighted by CorSport, the Rossoneri’s opponents have scored regularly from that area of the pitch in these first eight rounds of Serie A. Neither Davide Calabria nor Andrea Conti, no one has succeeded so far.
This situation was already evident in the derby, where both goals came from that area. Marcelo Brozovic’s shot in the first case and Niccolo Barella’s cross for Romelu Lukaku’s head in the second. The same area, moreover, where the actions that led to Andrea Belotti’s brace against Torino were born.
The data is clear: in that portion of the field the opponents always find the space to hut Milan. Even the match with Lecce proved AC Milan’s main weakness. Conti’s hand ball caused the penalty at the start of the second half and in the end Marco Calderoni scored a long-range goal from that area. And always on the right wing, AC Milan have been punished with two red cards, both for Davide Calabria.
The problem is that after two serious injuries Conti has never returned to be that player seen at Atalanta. While what’s happening to Calabria is indeed inexplicable. The top performances seen in pre-season are just a mirage.
The 22-year-old right back has apologized to the squad and fans for his ‘bad moment’. Coach Pioli is counting a lot on him and should deploy Calabria from the first minute against Roma. It could be a fresh start for the young Rossonero precisely at the Olimpico where he scored his first Serie A goal in February 2018.
