AC Milan have prioritized the purchase of Barcelona central midfielder Ivan Rakitic in January and the Spanish giants are open to sell.
AC Milan are having a very disappointing start to the season. The 18-time Serie A winners are languishing in 12th place in the league with just 10 points from 9 matches. That’s why the club is looking to sign new players in January to support its rebuild and Ivan Rakitic is one of the top targets.
Asked about the transfer plans of AC Milan, Ivan Gazidis opened to the idea of purchasing an experienced player. “We are always observant on market, in January I don’t like to be very active but sometimes it is necessary. The strategy is clear: invest in young players and make them grow, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t invest in experienced players like we did with Higuain. You can’t burn money with players in decline, ours must be a responsible road“.
The Rossoneri CEO has reportedly approved Maldini and Boban’s request to make investments in January and, besides a defender, an experienced player is expected to join Stefano Pioli’s side. Spanish newspaper AS reports that AC Milan have turned their attention from Modric to Rakitic.
The Croatian 31-year-old central midfielder could provide the necessary creative spark that the Rossoneri so desperately need. Rakitic is no longer an undisputed starter at Camp Nou and Barcelona are open to sell. However, despite his contract expiring in 2021, Barcelona value Rakitic at €20 million.
Zvonimir Boban could exercise his influence to lure Ivan Rakitic at San Siro. The Croatian international is not happy with his current role at Barcelona and is expected to change club soon. He could fill a crucial position at the San Siro and remains a more viable option than Modric for AC Milan.
