Disappointing results, lack of consistency and another year out of Champions League could force AC Milan to sell captain Alessio Romagnoli.
The Derby della Madonnina was not a good evening for AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli. The Rossoneri centre back faced heavy criticism for his positioning on the occasion of Stefan de Vrij’s goal. Part of the supporters think he has not lived up to the Rossoneri captain’s armband due to the lack of leadership while Italian media claims that Romagnoli is the symbol of the many overrated players that populate AC Milan today.
It is also difficult to blame him for De Vrij’s goal. It was a merit of the Dutchman rather than a mistake by Romagnoli. The 25-year-old defender has proven to be an excellent footballer many times but the fact that he remains Acerbi’s back-up in the national team is a disturbing obstacle for his grow.
Nevertheless, Alessio, just like the rest of the squad, lacks consistency. A determinant factor of success in football. His defensive partners, Simon Kjaer and Mateo Musacchio, have done little to give a helping hand and ease Romagnoli‘s burden. Meanwhile, AC Milan are destined for another disappointing season out of Champions League and important decisions will have to be made in the summer.
Among these there is also the future of Romagnoli. The Italian defender not too long ago changed his agent and passed into the hands of Mino Raiola. The infamous agent is known for the continuous movement of his players and therefore there is a legit suspicion that Alessio may leave Milan at the end of the season with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona ready to bring him to Spain. The captain is no longer consider unsellable by Milan reports Calciomercato. In fact he may be the big sacrifice in June to finance the arrival of new signings.
La Liga duo Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are very interested in Romagnoli. Apparently, Barcelona asked for information about him in January during the negotiation for Jean-Clair Todibo (joined Schalke 04 instead). Barca will sell one between Lenglet and Umtiti in the summer and aim for a top level replacement. Atletico Madrid coach Simeone is also on the hunt for a new centre back. AC Milan value Alessio Romagnoli at €50 million.
