Why AC Milan pulled out of Lozano deal
Paolo Maldini reveals that AC Milan were very close to signing Hirving Lozano this summer but pulled out of a deal after Giampaolo’s change of formation.
MILAN TRANSFER NEWS – During the summer transfer window, AC Milan contacted a number of players. Despite the Rossoneri’s stubborn insistence on Angel Correa, the club negotiatied even other players including former PSV talent Hirving Lozano.
In an interview with TUDN, AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini, revealed that he was very close to the purchase of Lozano. Latter, the 24-year-old Mexican star winger joined Napoli for €42 million becoming their most expensive signing ever.
“Lozano? We observed him, we thought about buying him and we talked to his agent (Mino Raiola), but in the end there was a problem about his position on the field. Last year we played with a 4-3-3 formation, the perfect form for him, but now we play in another way.
Lozano was an option, but he made the decision to go to another big club like Napoli with Ancelotti, a teacher who will help him a lot“, said Maldini. It seems like the decision to bet on Giampaolo’s 4-3-1-2 game system was the main reason why negotiation failed.
Hirving excelled in his two seasons in Netherlands. He scored 40 goals and provided 23 assists in 79 appearances for PSV Eindhoven winning the Eredivisie title in 2018. Widely considered as one of the best wingers in Europe, a player of his talent would have been very useful at San Siro.
