AC Milan to choose new captain after Bonucci’s departure
The negotiation for the transfer of Leonardo Bonucci to Juventus it’s not yet closed but the parties are optimistic and a deal is expected to be reached soon. His sale would mean that the position of team’s captain would remain void.
When Bonucci’s departure is official AC Milan will automatically initiate internal consultations to elect the new bearer of the historic Rossoneri captaincy. Last year Bonucci was awarded by the Chinese ownership in an attempt to convince him to move to San Siro and immediately make him the recognized leader of the locker room. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport this year the new AC Milan captain will be chosen by the team and obviously approved by management and coach Gennaro Gattuso.
In the exit-pools of Milanello’s locker room, two players have come out as primary candidates. The first is Alessio Romagnoli, a very acceptable candidacy within the Rossoneri environment. The young centre back renewed his contract with AC Milan just a few months ago linking himself with the club for many years at a time when the future of Milan was unclear. He also rejected offers from Chelsea, Juventus and Real Madrid to stay at San Siro, a sign of absolute attachment to the Rossoneri colors, therefore worthy of wearing the armband.
The other is Giacomo Bonaventura, who for seniority and maturity would be a perfect leader, also considering his spirit of sacrifice and the ability to play in many positions, wherever the coach and the team needs. While Lucas Biglia, vice-captain last year, has also lost many points due to a disappointing first season at San Siro.
