AC Milan made summer bid for Manchester United star
English press reveals that AC Milan made an official offer to sign Manchester United star Nemanja Matic during the summer.
AC Milan’s summer shopping campaign was characterized by the purchase of many young players, without at single player over 25 joining Giampaolo’s side but that wasn’t for the lack of trying. In fact, the Rossoneri tried to sign Manchester United star Nemanja Matic.
Give the low average age of the first-team, a more mature profile would have been very useful and a player of Matic’s characteristics fits the requirements. Paolo Maldini, while answering a question about Luka Modric, had confirmed the need to sign an experienced player who can serve as a guide for the young players on the team. However, the economic conditions blocked his transfer to Italy.
According to Daily Mirror, AC Milan made an official offer to Manchester United for Nemanja Matic. However, the Red Devils rejected it and did the same with another bid from Inter. Both Milanese clubs considered the 31-year-old Serbian midfielder suited to Serie A football.
United didn’t accept the offer because they felt that financially it wasn’t high enough for them to sell Matic. The former Chelsea has a contract with the Red Devils until June 2020 and doesn’t intend to sign an extension. Matic is not part of the technical-tactical project of coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is therefore destined to leave. Perhaps as early as January, when both Milan and Inter alert on his situation.
The Serbian defensive midfielder earns a high salary of 7 million euros per year but is willing to lower his wage if Milan offer him a long-term contract. Manchester United paid €45 million to sign Nemanja from Chelsea in 2017 but will be forced to accept just a fraction of that fee in January in order to avoid losing him for free next summer. Milan currently have two two players in Matic’s position, Lucas Biglia and Ismael Bennacer. The Argentine could leave during the winter opening a vacant position in midfield.
