Spanish champions Atletico Madrid are eyeing AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli as the possible heir of Diego Simeone.

When Stefano Pioli took charge at AC Milan the squad seemed in the brink of disaster. The Italian coach inherited a disoriented group of players from Marco Giampaolo and problems continued for a few months. With the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Simon Kjaer, the Rossoneri immediately found their path and have not looked back ever since.

AC Milan returned to Champions League after a seven-year absence while this season the Rossoneri are fighting for the Scudetto. Pioli has done a great job in collaboration with the management and his deeds are not going unnoticed.

According to reports, Atletico Madrid have eyed Stefano Pioli as a possible successor of Diego Simeone. Atletico Madrid sporting director, Andrea Berta, has contacted Pioli on behalf of the Spanish champions to understand if he would be open to take over from Simeone at the end of the season.

Atletico Madrid are having a very disappointing season so far. They are currently fifth in La Liga standings, 15 points below Real Madrid. The Colchoneros failed to replicate last season’s success with Diego Simeone unable to get the best out of his star strikers like Joao Felix, Antoine Griezmann and Matheus Cunha. Rumors have emerged that Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone could part ways at the end of the season after more than a decade together.

Stefano Pioli is under contract with AC Milan for one more season. Despite reports of a possible extension, the Rossoneri management has yet to sit down with the Italian coach and discuss a new agreement. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are keeping a close ye on his situation.
