AC Milan sack Fonseca with new coach already accepting the job
Paulo Fonseca will no longer be the coach of AC Milan with the Rossoneri already lining up another Portuguese coach to take charge.
AC Milan and Paulo Fonseca are set to part ways immediately after tonight’s 1-1 draw against Roma. The Portuguese coach who signed a three-year deal when he joined the Rossoneri during the summer will not last more than six months in charge of the Italian club. Following a string of disappointing performances, AC Milan have decided to take a new direction and trust the club to another coach.
Rumors of a tense situation between Fonseca and the AC Milan management emerged since yesterday seemingly out of nowhere. As hours passed the situation became clear after news that AC Milan have already agreed a deal in principle with Sergio Conceiçao to take over. The former Porto coach is set to succeed Paulo Fonseca at the Rossoneri.
Sergio Conceiçao has accepted AC Milan’s proposal of a six-month contract at one million euros until the end of the season with a renewal option for one more year if results will be pleasing to the Rossoneri management. In fact, Sergio Conceiçao was one of the main candidates for the AC Milan job since the summer before the Red and Blacks opted to trust Paulo Fonseca instead.
Conceiçao has a long career as a footballer representing the Portuguese national team and with a past in Italy at Inter, Parma and Lazio. On manager level he achieved great success in charge of Porto guiding the Portuguese giants for seven years before parting ways during the summer following the appointing of a new president at the club. Porto won the league on three occasions and the cup on four during Conceiçao’s reign at the club.
Paulo Fonseca failed to improve the squad inherited by Stefano Pioli. The Portuguese coach claimed he would build a dominating squad but AC Milan constantly conceded goals even from small clubs and the squad never seemed to show a clear identity. The highlights of Paulo Fonseca’s tenure in charge of AC Milan will be the derby win against Inter and the beautiful victory against Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage at the Bernabeu.
