AC Milan set to decide between two names for new coach

AC Milan are set to part ways with Paulo Fonseca after the derby with the Portuguese coach loosing the trust of the squad and management.

AC Milan and Paulo Fonseca are set to part ways really soon. The Portuguese coach has had a disastrous start in charge of AC Milan winning only one out of the four Serie A matches (against Venezia) and losing the Champions League opener with Liverpool. The clash with Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez is just the tip of the iceberg with the Portuguese coach also having problems with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who on two occasions has met with the squad without Fonseca’s presence openly undermining his position.

The entire AC Milan management and the squad appears to have lost confidence in the Portuguese. In fact, AC Milan are set to sack Paulo Fonseca after the derby in case of a negative result according to recent reports. There have already been confirmed contacts between the Rossoneri directors and a couple of coaches.

The dream of the Rossoneri is Thomas Tuchel but the German coach demands a lucrative contract (over 8 million per season) plus significant investments that Milan are not willing to fulfill. At the moment the choice for AC Milan’s next coach is between Maurizio Sarri and Igor Tudor. Sarri is the top choice for a number of reasons while Ibrahimovic favors the appointment of Tudor.

Maurizio Sarri looks perfect for AC Milan base 4-3-3 game system, plus he is Very familiar with the Italian league. The 65-year-old Italian coach has also top club experience having been in helm of Napoli, Chelsea and Juventus in the past winning the Serie A and Europa League. His last stint was at Lazio (he achieved second place) where he gained praise for forming a team that was very strong defensively without the presence of big names. Defensive solidity is exactly what AC Milan are currently missing. In addition, at Milan, Sarri would reteam with Ruben Loftus-Cheek who had a great season together and Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori.

Igor Tudor was the coach to succeed Maurizio Sarri at Lazio. Tudor returned in Italy following his one-season spell at Marseille. He ended the season in seventh place with Lazio, securing Europa League football. He left at the end of the season after falling out with key figures of the squad. Ibrahimovic appreciates a lot Tudor’s character and determination but a person who rarely stays at the club for more than one season may not be the choice for a squad like Milan that needs continuity.
