AC Milan defender Mattia Caldara leaves the Rossoneri to join Atalanta after just 18 months at San Siro.
In a surprising turn of events AC Milan have decided to practically sell Mattia Caldara. The 25-year-old Italian centre back returns to Atalanta where he started his career and established himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A.
“He returns home , at his family. The choice is normal. He needed to start again from where he did better and where everyone knows him. He needed this now. We must also thank AC Milan who understood the boy’s needs. Mattia has had a year and a half of physical problems. He needed to play and regain game rhythm“, said Caldara’s agent Giuseppe Riso.
Despite the understandable need of the player to find continuity on the pitch the details of Caldara’s transfer to Atalanta are quite concerning. Mattia Caldara joins Atalanta on loan for 18-months and the Bergamo club have the right to make the move permanent for a fee of just €15 million.
AC Milan will also have a percentage on his next sale. Nevertheless, the agreed terms represent a drastic loss on the Rossoneri’s initial investment. AC Milan signed Mattia Caldara in 2018 in a swap deal with Juventus for Leonardo Bonucci. Both players were valued at €35 million at that time.
The transfer details have infuriated the AC Milan fans who comment that “Atalanta has won 6-0″ referring to the previous match between the two club. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that AC Milan have closed the signing Simone Kjaer from Atalanta on loan for the remaining of the season. The Rossoneri have the option to sign Kjaer on a permanent deal for €2.5 million. The Denmark international has made 5 appearances in Serie A so far.
