AC Milan have already made contact to discuss the transfer of Canadian striker Jonathan David from Lille.
In the last day of the summer transfer window AC Milan completed their attack with the signing of Luka Jovic. Having seen transfers for Mehdi Taremi, Patson Daka and Rafa Mir collapse, the Rossoneri turned to the former Fiorentina centre forward who arrives on a season-long loan. However, during those frenetic hours AC Milan made an inquire about Lille star Jonathan David.
The Rossoneri tried to sign Jonathan David on loan from Lille but, as expected, the bid was not taken into consideration by the French club who could never let their star leave on loan. Nevertheless, this was just a first contact. Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Jonathan David is the top transfer target of AC Milan for next summer and the Rossoneri have already started to work in this regard.
The contract of Jonathan David with Lille expires in 2025 so next summer he will have only one year remaining. Signing players with only one year of contract has been exactly the strategy of Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada. Players like Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek and Chukwueze were under similar contract conditions before eventually joining the Rossoneri club.
AC Milan have projected Jonathan David to be the long-term heir of Olivier Giroud. The French striker turns 38-year-old next season and Milan are already at work to find top level replacement. Giroud will need to pass the baton and the 23-year-old Canada international is considered the perfect player to continue to provide goals for Stefano Pioli’s side.
Jonathan David has done a great work at Lille in replacing Victor Osimhen and helping them win Ligue 1 and the Super Cup in 2021. The Lille star has been one of the best Ligue 1 players in his three seasons in France. In fact, David has scored 61 goals and provided 10 assists in 141 appearances with Lille across all competitions. An important bid will be required to snatch Jonathan from Lille but AC Milan are prepared to make big investment for the 23-year-old striker.
